The Boat

SweetHaven

In the 70's, in San Diego, Norman Cross rented a hanger at old Brown Field to provide a space for builders of his cruising trimaran designs. Several Cross trimarans were built within and the site was a crossroads for the West Coast Multihull Rennaisance. Builders met, ideas were discussed, dreams were shared, and some very good sailing boats were born. One visitor to Brown's Field commented that the 37' custom cutter design would look better if the main hull transom were extended to share the rake of the aka transoms, Cross agreed and offered the option to builders. SweetHavens beautiful windswept lines are the result. 30 years later the fellow who suggested the transom rake tracked her down in Mexico, test sailed her, and had her shipped to the Pacific Northwest, where two owners proceeded to mistreat her, damaging and rebuilding both her amas. Feeling such sympathy and the need to rescue this beautiful boat from neglectful owners, we bought her, brought her home to Oak Harbor and are making her our own.

SweetHaven is a work in progress, but we see her amazing potential and will keep you updated on her remodel.

SweetHaven specifications.
LOA: 39'
Year: 1979
Beam: 24'
Draft: 6'

SweetHaven  has a large engine room in the stern, behind the cockpit, where the fuel tank is plus lots of storage and working room. She has tiller steering into a spacious covered cockpit. Steps leading down below into the vaka (the main center hull) into the horseshoe galley to the port, navigation station and electrical panel on the port. Farther in is seating to both sides of the cabin, the table to the starboard. There are two large double cabins above the settees inside the akas (the wings attaching the main hull to the outer hulls) to the port and starboard. Further in the main cabin through a through way leads into an empty compartments which currently is a closet but will be where we eventually install our head. Through the other side of that is the V birth.
She needs some major cleaning and some rearranging and a lot of installing to make her livable but she has lots of storage in either ama and she's fast and stable. A project with potential.

  1. Hi,
We'd like to visit on Tuesday when we go into Oak Harbor for shopping. We moved to Coupeville 4 months ago (renting) from Maine. But we lived on our catamaran, a Catalac 12M, Dumela for almost three years on the East coast. Would love to meet you and share some experiences.
