This painting project has been way more of a big deal than I had anticipated. That was probably naive of me to think painting out the entire interior of a boat would be a one or two day project, but we are on day four of painting and still aren't even half any through.
We have painted houses so many times in the past and that went very fast but when you are dealing with tight spaces, lots of corners and weird angles that need to be cut in and it's not like you can take a big roller and quickly get it done in a few swipes. Plus with all the new wood and fibreglass in there we had a lot of priming to do as well.
We do hate painting, it's no fun, but the results are nice. I love seeing all the gross, dirty, cream walls disappearing and nice crisp white ones appear. One new thing we did discover is that you can no longer purchase oil based paint. So we are actually painting the inside of the boat with the topcoat enamel paint we bought months ago. We let the kids each pick out a colour to paint their cabins in, since Mac and Finn will share a cabin, we had some disagreements but they settled on blue for the walls (Mac's choice) and sparkly green paint for the window shelf (Finns choice). Aislinn chose old fashioned pink for her walls and sparkly pink for her shelf, I am still waiting for the day when Ash grows out of this pink-loving stage, but it's been seven years and she hasn't wavered yet.
The boys room in progress. The blue actually looks very nice, we managed to find a shade of blue in enamel, porch paint in the mis-tint section of Home Depot and got a gallon for only $9. We are also going to use it for the floor paint in the main cabin and the storage spaces underneath the v berth.
The v berth completely painted out, the head is done too except for the closet there which needs another coat of primer before the final coat.
In other news, all our deliveries are starting to roll in, we've received the mattress for the v berth and the sailrite supplies for making our trampolines, the netting was just shipped out today so expecting that sometime this week.
Our boat project list is finally getting down, our most recent purchase was for normal homey things like, storage units for the kids cabins and bins to go in them, a tv for the main cabin, an air purifier and dehumidifier and a porch potty for the dog; things that we need to generally make the boat comfortable. Of course we also ordered a transom mounted sonar, stainless steels tubing to fabricate lifeline stations and a flexible 50 gallon fresh water tank.
I say our list is getting down and it is, but there will always be projects, always be a list of things to buy, but it is gratifying to see things getting checked off.
